The Right People are Fair

    The largest responsibility of the 19th century was handed to one man, a thoughtful man with great perseverance and a large sense of fairness.
    After Abraham Lincoln took office as President of the United States, the nation broke in two, and Lincoln's unique purpose in life was suddenly revealed.
    The agony of civil war is an enormous test of a leader. Lincoln knew that all the losses suffered on both sides would be American losses. It was a war that could not be won, because the enemy was within - ideology was the battleground.
    Fairness was Lincoln's objective all along. It was a character trait he had demonstrated throughout his life. Ten years earlier, in Springfield, Illinois, young Abraham served as the attorney for the plaintiff in a high profile patent law case. The counsel for the defendant was another bright young lawyer named Edwin M. Stanton. The court battles between Lincoln and Stanton were unrelenting and sometimes contemptuous. Yet when Lincoln was seeking the ideal man to serve as Secretary of War, he appointed his bitter rival of earlier days. Lincoln recognized and respected Stanton's qualities - and nothing else mattered.
    By concentrating on unity rather than seeking retribution, Lincoln's America survived.
    No one knows how Lincoln might have served as commander-in-chief in another war, or during peacetime. But it is clear that his compassion and judgment brought this nation safely out of its most trying time.
    Many historians look to Lincoln as our greatest president. He was certainly handed our nation's greatest challenge.
